In 2015, the Fannie Lou Hamer Cancer Foundation (FLHCF) launched its national fundraising campaign to raise $5 million dollars to be used solely to pay for the construction costs for the 10,000 square foot headquarters including landscaping and furniture, to be known as the Fannie Lou Hamer Cancer Foundation Center. The FLHCF’ Center will be built in Ruleville, MS , at the intersection of Highway 8 and Floyce Street on 5 ½ acres of land purchased and owned by the FLHCF. The Center will serve as the headquarters for the Mississippi Network for Cancer Control and Prevention program staff, as well hire up to 10 new employees for jobs created directly as a result of federal, state, and grant funds.
The FLHCF’s Headquarters will provide:
Community Cancer Awareness and Outreach through our 1000+ trained community health advisors (volunteers) who go from door to door educating individuals about cancer, recruiting underserved men and women who have rarely or never been screened for cancer, and referring individuals for cancer screening in the rural Mississippi Delta’s 18-county area;
Training of program staff, community leaders, and volunteers;
An Electronic Cancer Resource Center “In Memory of our beloved Chairman, Alfio Rausa, M.D.” that will be computer-based and available at no cost to anyone needing information on cancer;
A Meeting Place and Planning Site for the coordination of diagnostic services and treatment with other key stakeholders;
Case and Care Management Services to include patient and family education, transportation assistance, and connection (access) to financial resources to pay for medical, surgical and/or care costs, and follow-up;
Host Site for Teaching and Education Sessions at the center as well as in the community, churches, civic clubs, community centers, and schools;
Survivorship and a Cancer Support Network for cancer patients and their family;
Family and Individual Counseling Services, group support activities, and spiritual connections; and
Patient Navigation composed of trained Community Health Advisors who are community-oriented, trusted, and to whom community members turn in times of need.
